This week we started our study of the Constitution and the freedoms that make us
uniquely American. You can order your own free copy of the United States
Constitution from: http://www.constitutionfacts.com/index.cfm?section=bookstore&page=freeCopy.cfm
Normally, our first blog
post has something to do with the freedoms you value most and whether or not you
are proud to call yourself an American. This quarter, I would like to start with
something different. A good portion of this class will be spent discussing
current events and political issues that affect our everyday lives. For this
post, I would like you to tell me at least one issue that you are interested in
studying. To help you out, you can look over the blog posts that we've had in
the past several years to get an idea of the type of things we've covered. Many
of the topics are pretty controversial and I do my best to not censor the
information available to you.
So my question to you this week is, "What
is one issue that you are interested in studying in this class?" Answers are due
no later than Wednesday, October 10th, 2012. I hope all of you had a wonderful fall break!
I am interested in studying how big business effects our legislation through lobbying. This is one thing that bothers me about our modern political system is that the politicians don't seem to be fighting for us (their constituents) but for businesses instead.
ReplyDeleteI would like to follow the Presidential election in class and discuss why voting is important and what factors should be considered when deciding who to vote for. Being able to vote is a great honor and I feel that it is often not taken seriously and voters allow minor or inconsequential facts to sway their votes away from the bigger issues.

ReplyDeleteI would like to study the relationship between the state and the Federal governments. Does the state of Indiana affect the policies of the Federal government? For example, if the state of Indiana thought that the Federal government needs to invest more money in developing renewable energy sources. Does the state of Indiana have weight in changing the Federal government policies regarding this matter?

An issue that I would like to learn about more in depth when it comes to class, is basically our Department of Homeland securities and how it is affecting the rights of Americans. I understand that the whole idea is to protect the American people, but it looks as though some of their tactics are taking away some of our freedoms. I'm most interested in the topics that involve are rights and freedom. Looking forward to continuing on in class.
ReplyDeleteWell, I can't say that I am very knowledgeable when it comes to politics and the different area's of debate, but I suppose one of the subjects I would like to learn more about would be the restrictions on open religious statement and prayer. I know that some religious statements can be used in wrong and offensive ways, but I've heard of other times where people weren't doing anything wrong and got sued for it. I just think it would be interesting to learn more about it.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in studying the unemployment, and abortion situations in this class. I have very strong opinions and feel that it would be beneficial for everyone in the class. I also disagreed very strongly when people said the election was boring I found it very interesting, and have watched it multiple times. I personally don't think it could have gone any better. I think this will be a very exciting election and am looking forward to future discussions.
ReplyDeleteI am excited to learn about many different things in this class. It will be interesting to get multiple opinions from classmates on different social issues. However, I am looking forward to anything having to do with foreign policy.
ReplyDeleteA couple of topics that I would be interested in learing about over the this next quarter would be abortion and the public display of religions. I know that both of these are pretty controversial subjects, but I think it would be interesting to get some different points of view on them. I am very anxious to get to see how this class is going to go, and what all we will be able to talk about.
ReplyDeleteI think that I am interested in studying politics in general. I really don't know to much about politics or follow politics at all, and since it is an election year it might be a good time to change that, and learn as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI have never been too concerned with spending my time thinking or researching politics but since we have an election this year I figured I probably should become more involved if I plan on voting. My two major interest when it comes to political issues are our country's debt and how much we spend every year and our economy and the lack of jobs there are in our country. I think that if I vote this year I will be more concerned with who is going to focus on and do something about these situations.
ReplyDeleteI would like to learn more about the issues on immigration. I would like to be more aware of what is going on in Arizona and what exactly the new law there that was passed states. Also, I would like to know where our presidential candidates stand on the issue. I look forward to the class and learning what everyone else wants to learn as well.
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a specific topic in politics that I want to learn more about. I don't really know much about politics and want to have a better understanding of multiple topics. I'm also excited to hear other peoples opinions because I believe that's the most beneficial way to learn.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know more about what the Government is doing to help those in need of medical attention. For example, stem cell research, health insurance, medicinal marijuana and so on. This is a topic close to my heart. I would like have a better understand of the Government mindset when it comes to these topics.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the date is past due, I'm interested in the thoughts of Coming Out Day, same sex marriage, the effects of younger LGBT kids and adults in this real world of ours, and the intertwining of bullying in America. These issues are just two things that have became "popular" as some would say, and I would like to know more on the political side and what the government or societies are doing about this. I only hear what people locally do or what entertainers do, but I'm interested in the political side of these issues. These issues have been involved with some of my closest friends and family and it's a subject that I am curious about.
ReplyDeleteI don't know really what I'm going to be into learning about this quarter. I like history, and find politics interesting to say the least. If I had to choose something to be excited about in class however, I'd have to just wait and see what we got into. I'm usually open minded, and ready to learn so..yeah, and whatnot.

(I made this account a while ago and forgot it existed, so I decided to just use it.)
I would to study more about the upcoming election. I do try to keep up on what their stances are on some things but I am extremely busy and can’t keep up sometimes. By having a better understanding on what the candidates stances are on job creation, foreign affairs, and immigration etc. We will be able to make a better selection when voting.
ReplyDeleteNot being really interested in politics as much as i should be, i would be interested in studying this up coming election. I never pay attention to them because i dont believe my choice will decide or even come close to helping the decision of who is elected and will run the country.
