Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day was this past Tuesday, April 22nd. Earth Day began in 1970, following the 1962 publication of Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson.  Carson’s book raised awareness on our country’s use of pesticides and their pollution of the environment, and she is often credited as starting the modern environmental movement.  Earth Day originally started as a day of education about environmental issues, and has expanded ever since.  Since 1990, Earth Day has been celebrated globally, with 140 nations participating.

Those of you who know me, know that I like to live as environmentally-friendly as possible. I recycle, use re-usable bags and containers, and try to cook with as much local food as possible. Buying my first home a few years ago opened up new ways of living more sustainably.  In addition to using compact fluorescent light bulbs inside the home, I installed a photocell that harvests solar energy to run my outdoor lights. I started a small garden, and had IPL come out to install my low-flow shower and faucet aerators, as part of their Energize Indiana program. To me, it has become a lifestyle and I’m always looking for new ways to use less.

In a few weeks, we will be discussing climate change and its effects on the planet. I know there’s a lot of controversy around the issue, but quite frankly, I think this is one of the biggest issues your generation may have to face. So my question to you this week is, “Do you think humans contribute to global warming? What would you be willing to do to help lower your effects on the environment?”  Answers are due no later than Wednesday, April 30th, 2014.

  1. I think their are some facts that support that we are changing the atmosphere of the earth. Ozone depletion is prevalent and is getting worse with time. We burn alot of fuel and chemicals that certainly would have never affected the earths atmosphere had we discovered how they could benefit us in the short term. In the end we are really hurting ourselves more than the earth. George Carlin said it best " The earth isn't going anywhere but, we are."

As far as helping to reduce my carbon footprint I would certainly want to be at 0.

    1. I don't think I could have said it better myself, and I give you big kudos for pulling out the quote from Old George
I would simply add my own opinion that, considering the fact that there are literally THOUSANDS of documents and articles written by scientists who are much better educated and informed than I am which all point to the inescapable fact that humans have at least strongly contributed to, if not outright caused the surge in climate change that has taken place within the last half-century alone
On top of that, there's just the fact that, despite the fact that some people on this world would be content to enjoy the wealth they've gained at the expense of the health of our biosphere and sell lies and false-truths to the general public to give us an excuse to put our blinders on, as well, our generation and certainly our children's' and grandchildren's' generations will have to face the harsh realities of climate change and its outcome
As far as what I'd be willing to do, I think there really is no limit...the problem arises when you consider how comparatively difficult it is to live as we would like and also have a more reasonable impact on our planet
Still, I think we cannot avoid it any longer, as individuals and as a society...as Old George also said, "The planet will be fine; the PEOPLE are f**ked"

  2. I believe the human plays a huge roll in global warming. The chemicals and energy that exhaust from our daily lives adds up.

  3. Human beings have created a life for themselves that is killing out environment and is also causing global warming. With all the machines and factories that run and give off diesel emissions that destroy our ozone layer. Global warming is a real threat that is still growing and it needs to be stopped in its tracks. I would like to do as much as possible to help save our planet, even if we aren't on this planet anymore we should at least leave a legacy that we cared about our home and about where we started.

  4. Human beings are surely a species that contributes to the decline of what is perceived as a 'healthy' environment for life to thrive within. Global warming has already reached the point of no return. That just leaves us with the option of preparing for the consequences of are polluting of the atmosphere. I, myself, am a person who rejects litter and polluting, however I am also one who doesn't try to force his beliefs onto others. To help reduce global warming I'll do my part of recycling, and properly throwing away my trash everyday as I have been doing.

  5. I think that humans are contributing to global warming. I also think that everyone needs to be more involved in trying to slow global warming. I try to do my part even though I could be doing more. If I had my own house I would try to be a energy saving as I could.

  6. Yes I do believe that believe that humans play a major rule in global warming. There are alot of different things we can use but a lot of folks don't care or they just don't want to take the time to find out how can they help. I use the light bulbs that save energy in the house and the faucet fixings that have less water coming out.

  7. I do believe that humans play a role in in global warming. If I had my own home that I had owned I would contribute to use less by using compact fluorescent light bulbs in the home. Also I would recycle plastic items, paper, and glass. I would also try to shut off the lights during the day and open the curtains to let the light in.

  8. I don't believe that humans are the reason for global warming what so ever. Our weather fluctuates being hot or cold and we only know about the past 150 years for sure so before that we have no idea what would possibly be the cause or global warming. I do a lot of recycling and teach my children to not use stuff that is not biodegradeable. I use energy efficient lights and create a lot of different things from recycled materials.

  9. yes, as humans we contribute on a daily bases. global warming will always be a problem unless we all start making a change in our life styles. but as humans we are define under pressure, so once something traumatic happen to our climate then we as a people will banded together to make something happen. by that time it might be too late. providing awareness is the only soultion

  10. Yes humans are to blame. We need to find new energy sources that are not coal. We need to stop our useless consumption of energy. Something's are important, such as washing machines, cars, they make our lives significantly easier. We need to find better ways to energize these and use them less often.

  11. As a result of many observations and collections of data it can be argued that humans via pollution, have negatively affected the environment. The name global warming is suggestive about the rising temperatures all over the globe--with the cause being our excessive use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. In order to reduce pollution and to make the international community more energy-efficient, this two-step process requires aid from states and non-governmental organizations to help achieve these positive changes. These changes would include other forms of energy proliferation such as wind energy and nuclear energy. These forms are better for the environment and should be considered as alternatives to fossil fuels and helping make the positive changes towards the environment.

  12. We all are in some way a part of global warming. I try my best with what I personally can do to clean up this world. I myself can't save the world and its really hard for me to except this. I do not have recycle pick up where I live, so I have to physically take it to the correct spot to be recycled. My partner and I bought a truck for this reason. We go through so much glass, and aluminum cans. But buying this truck lets off so much nasty fumes than a little car would. I am a little torn because of this. I live on the Tippecanoe river and I really had to choose between my river that I love so dearly or try to take better care of the air. I try just justify my actions I guess. I had a great experience last week. Her and I went kayaking. I always pick up peoples trash left at the site we get out at. There where a few people fishing and saw me cleaning up. The man there told his kids to start picking stuff up. Its was great! Maybe seeing that someone cares made them think that is was important. I have no idea how to make it better, everyone needs to be aware that this stuff is really serious, and some just don't get it.

  13. It is not a matter of opinion. Scientific data has been conducted and reported on that we as humans are contributing to the change in climate in our world. We as a human race need to learn to work together and make improvements by lower our carbon emmisons and our global dependency on coal.

  14. Yes humans did contribute to global warming. The amount of smog and coal smoke released into the atmosphere over time, withering the Ozone layer. If people didnt make so much money off the oil industry we would have found a way to solve this problem by now. I read somewhere that 20-30 new energy projects were shelved because they would harm the profits of the oil industry. we need to move new energy projects like Spin Energy and Keshe Plasma if we want to save the planet.

  15. I really do think that we should take in consideration about our surroundings and how we should contribute to the situation by recycling by turning off lights if your not in the room just little things that make a difference

  16. I think humans have contributed to global warming a lot, and it is because we have become too reliant on things that pollute the environment.

  17. i do think humans have a huge impact in global warming. we are the only species who have a better chance at changing our climate due to factories, technology, and waste. What would i do to help the environment? if i had a great idea,, it would still be unstable. i think if i alone do acted on it, it would take everyone. its a responsibility not just for me but everone

  18. Yes, we are absolutely playing apart in global warming. But I dont feel that is only the responsibility of the people. Alot of technologies and power plants are definately playing a roll in air pollution. however, how do we survive without some of these things? for example transportation? I know that there are other means of traveling, but i think there would be alot more chaos if people stopped owning their own vehicles and started relying on busses for transportation or bike-riding etc. i feel that it would take EVERY SINGLE individual in the WORLD to make a change when it came to global warming, b/c in my opinion, its something that would take place no matter what...
and, according to the bible, there will come a time where it will be harder for us to tell each season from the other, b/c the summer months will be colder, and the winter months will grow warm...(which seems to already be taking place)

  19. I believe the earth responds to us. As in the more we do the more it does, the less we do the less it does. And its up to us to keep it on the up and up. We must always work toward bettering our environment by way of working at bettering ourselfs.

  20. we are huge contributors to global warming. one of the best things we can do is reduce the amount of fuel that we use. water levels are already rising. if we don't change soon the world is going to be in big trouble.

  21. For a long time, humans have been polluting water, lakes, seas, wildlife, and even the skies. It has occurred so that corporations that run certain tasks make a profit regardless of the harm they're causing in the environment. It is nearly impossible to stop what these people are doing because politicians enable these corporations to keep progressing with the negativity they're causing to this planet. If this keeps progressing any further, the planet would be in complete danger.

  22. The United States government recently came out with a report stating humans do in fact contribute to global warming. We cannot argue against the fact that we do. All countries need to be following the same standards not just in gas emissions, but the way we choose to live life. Ultimately, the change will begin with large corporations. This will then cause the people of this world to be forced to change. An example of this is plastic bags for groceries will no longer be manufactured, causing the people of the world to use reusable bags.

  24. i do think that humans do contribute to global warming. i don't think there is much i can do, but whenever i have to throw a piece of paper away i make sure use the recycle bins. also my grandma and i recycle papers and cans at home.
