Health vs. Wealth

My family never had health insurance growing up. In fact, I never had health insurance until I graduated from college, and got my first professional job. We only saw a doctor if we were really, really sick and even then we just went to a clinic. Now I work at a place that pays 100% of my health insurance costs, and I try never to forget just how fortunate I am.  Medical debt is one of the top causes of bankruptcy in America. People can work their entire lives, and then just like that – one medical crisis can put them into staggering debt.

So because of my experience, I supported the Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as ObamaCare).  The Affordable Care Act prevents those with pre-existing medical conditions from being denied health insurance, eliminates co-pays for preventative care, and allows young adults to stay on their parents’ coverage until 26 years of age.
The Affordable Care Act also mandates that people who don’t have insurance pay a fee called the individual shared responsibility payment.  When non-insured people get sick, they often visit the emergency room, and that drives up costs for the rest of us who DO have insurance.  The fee is a way to offset those costs – it makes people who don’t have insurance “share responsibility” for higher costs. Individuals who have health insurance will no longer have to indirectly pay for emergency visits from individuals who aren’t insured.

I never thought too much about this fee until I did my taxes last week.  That’s when I discovered that if I didn’t have health insurance for any month throughout the year, I would need to pay the fee.  The fee is determined either by person - $695/per person, or by income – 2.5% of your income.  The kicker is that you pay whichever fee is higher.  So a person making $50,000/year would pay $1,250 for not having health insurance for the entire year.  I don’t know about you, but 2.5% of my income seemed kind of high to me – until I saw that my health insurance costs for the year were over three times that amount!  All of a sudden, the fee didn’t seem that bad.

Still, the Affordable Care Act has not been without controversy. Republicans feel it hurts employers because it requires companies with over 50 employees to provide health insurance to their employees.  Opponents to the new law also feel it amounts to over-reaching by the federal government – essentially saying it is not the federal government’s job to mandate healthcare for all citizens - hence, the "socialist" label we discussed in class last week.
So my question to you this week is, “What do you think of the Affordable Care Act?  Do you support or oppose it and why?”  You must answer both questions for full credit.  Whether you like it or not, this issue directly affects you – and one way or another you will soon be paying for healthcare costs, if you’re not already.  Answers are due no later than Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

Just for fun, check out this Jimmy Kimble video in which he goes to the street to find out if people support the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare (hint: they’re the same thing). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx2scvIFGjE

  1. I support it but i feel like it is not finished and needs to be made better. I feel it has alot of good points like allowing everyone to have health insurance. But i feel we should follow more of a South Korea health systems. The fact that you have to sell your house to get a major surgery is ridiculous.

  2. I think the medical industry is a big scam. The cost for medical care in this country is outrageous and they should not be allowed to take everything a person owns, because his/her life depends on it. I think there are many things that could be done still to make it more reasonable for the people that have a harder time affording it. It also should be a choice to have health insurance, you shouldn't have to pay for something that you don't want.

  3. This is an interesting subject because me and my mom were just talking about how crazy it is that you have to, like Kevin stated, basically sell your house to get a major surgery. I think the medical side of the government is just as scandalous as the rest and it is affecting the people in a major way. Why should somebody who is in a life or death situation have to pay an arm and a leg to get helped???

  4. I not not supported the Affordable Care Act. If i want care then I should pay for it but i do not want it but the government tells us that we need it. Because of this my care prizes at work keeps going up each year. why is it that woman get better health insurance then man with the same health insurance. what about others that are getting away with not having health insurance. I also think this is going to go away after the new Present

  6. At first I was a supporter of the Affordable Health Care Act. I thought it was great that people would all be able to have insurance. I have had it for years and my husband gets it at work for a reasonable rate. The tax penalty it outrageous I don't think we should fine people because they still can not afford health care. I have found that ever since this act passed the insurance companies pay for less and less things. They used to cover immunizations up to 5 now its 2. I found that out after I got a bill for $500 from the pediatrician. The do not cover all of my children's yearly exams anymore which they used to. We have had trips to the emergency room which do not get covered. I think its a big scam for the insurance companies. How can you have health insurance and still not afford to go to the doctor?

  7. The only good thing coming out of the affordable health care act is they lower some prices. I support it but it's much work that needs to be done to improve it, especially if they call it affordable and it's really not the way way that it seems. -shanniqua norman-

  9. I thought it was a great idea when I first heard about it, because like a lot of other people my family could not afford health insurance, and my mother was able to get me on Medicaid when I was about 17 or 18 when my dad lost his job and left for training out of state to be a truck driver. Now as an adult, I have a job that pays much better then I could ever expect without having to put in 40 hours a week, but unfortunately I still have to live with my parents and still have no way of paying for my own insurance, and not only that I don't trust most insurance companies. My mother just last year followed the steps to get health insurance for her self and was just screwed over for almost half a year trying to make the outrageous payments that they kept saying she needed to pay (total sum of $600+) and not once being able to use it. So I agree with a lot of other people in saying I think its a great idea but there are to many problems with it already and it needs to be fixed because I am tired of being screwed over because we get sick.

  10. I feel the affordable care Act was an amazing call by Obama. I too grew up in a home where we didn't have insurance either, if me or my dad got sick we went to the ER. I fully support this act I feel everyone should have health insurance affordable or not affordable you want to be able to afford different medicines you may need to survive. This is my second time having insurance through my job in my life, in the past I would normally turn down the insurance because it was so high! But now I feel great about having insurance especially since I recently had an unfortunate health change in my life being diagnosed with diabetes. If I had not had health insurance I would have had to pay a tremendous amount of money out of pocket which I didn't have so I thank GOD and Obama for the Affordable Care Act also known as Obama Care! I also had no idea that with out health insurance through out the year you would have to pay 2.5 percent of your earnings wow!

  11. I can honestly say that I don't really know too much about the Act. My mom is a doctor and I've just been on her insurance. I will say that I should have paid attention more because it will effect me here soon. However, I do believe that it is crazy house some people have to go homeless when they need an extreme surgery, that I'm not a fan of.

  12. I don't know much about the act because my family does not have health insurance and are just now obtaining it. But from reading this blog I feel that the Affordable Care Act has help people and that it can keep supporting people who have not had health care before. I support it because I feel that health care is important. It's all still new to me but I feel that the longer we keep the ACA we can help others who cannot help themselves because I've been to the hospital with any type of insurance and had to pay a huge amount of money that kept me and my family in debt.

  13. i neither oppose it or am for it, i have VA health insurance with is pretty great, except for major surgeries, and with that my dr visits, emergency room visits, and prescriptions cannot be changed in price they are all a flat fee. as for what i think, it probably will help people in the end game, but its alot if you do not have health insurance, but forcing people to get it because you say so is not very pleasant. however i am a pirate so i force people to do things i want on the daily.

  14. I think we live in a nation where it is possible to offer health care for every one. I don't know too much about it but I know that people without health insurance increase the cost of medical procedures for everyone else. I've always had health insurance through my dad but now that I am 28 I had to get my own. I pay $208 a month to my employer starting for the first time this year. I don't like it. It's cheaper than the penalty. But I know it offers the cheapest prices for me and I know this is for the benefit of everyone.

  15. The affordable care act is a good idea but I think it should be more affordable. I believe all health insurance should be more affordable. I pay $200 a month to my employer and my medicine is still sometimes $80. With the affordable care act they was trying to charge me way more. Sometime I feel like dropping my insurance all together but I know that would not be the best option. Its a great idea just need to be a little more affordable.

  17. I think the affordable health care act is good for the people. Unfortunately i oppose it because its NOT affordable. they taking all my money either way it goes. if i dont pay it they take it out my taxes each year if i do i feel like im paying (200X12) $2,400 a year. I mean dang i dont like it! "it cost to live and it cost to die"

  18. The affordable health care act has a good concept but it needs a lot of work done still especially when its called the affordable health care and its still pricey.

  19. I think its a good idea well if it was more affordable to everyone. I don't understand why you have to pay so much for health care? And its dumb that if you don't have health care you end up paying more then actually paying for it. Honestly makes no sense to me what so ever.

  20. I am ok with the idea of the affordable healthcare act but the exaction of the act is pretty stupid. The fact that he wants everyone to have healthcare is cool , but to be penalized financially if you don't have it is pretty dumb, why charger me for something that I choose not to use

I think the health care act is a good plan. Health is important to everyone and not everybody can afford it. It is nice that jobs consider it. I recently just recieved from my job health care and benefiets plan.

  22. I believe that the Affordable Healthcare Act is a good program because a lot of young people who don't work struggle to get health insurance. Now days young people are more likely to be with diseases stds, an other health problems. It is also good for people because it doesn't deny people from receiving health insurance. I support it but I don't think that people should have to take their taxes and pay the emergency room back what they owe. Some people don't even get that much back in taxes and need to pay more important bills such as lights and rent. I would be pissed if I had to give my taxes away because of an "emergency" situation.

  23. I sort of support it. I don't think it's fair that people who work hard have to pay for people to have healthcare. I think it would be a lot better if we didn't have such a pay gap in America. It is nice for people who don't have enough money to afford healthcare, but at the same time I don't see how it's all entirely fair. Some people are just lazy.

  24. I totally support it because healthcare should be available for everyone no matter the circumstances. Many of peoples lives could of been saved if they had healthcare.

I think the act is a wonderful thing, it gives people a chance to get healthy and find out what's going on in their body!
