The Next Great Indy Artist

The center where I was work was recently selected for a public art display as part of the Public Collection, which exists to “improve literacy, foster a deeper appreciation of the arts, and raise awareness for educational justice in our community.”  Through a curated process, Indiana-based artists were commissioned to design unique book share stations or lending libraries that are installed in public spaces around Indianapolis.  You can read more about the process, and see what the display at my center looks like here: http://www.thepubliccollection.org/artists/phil-omalley/

Public art gives young people something to do other than hang out in the streets. It can make neighborhoods nicer, increase property values, and attract new business, which brings new jobs. People that live in nice neighborhoods, are employed, and have enough money to raise a family are far less likely to commit crimes.

According to the Arts Council of Indianapolis, public art can take a variety of forms. Historically, art that is accessible to the public has been in the form of freestanding pieces of work or objects that occupy a public space, such as sculptures and memorials. Now, in a growing number of cities functional objects such as benches, trails, bridges and manhole covers can become commissioned works by artists.

Now those of you who know me, know that I am a big believer in giving back. Whether it’s volunteering someplace, helping someone in need, or contributing something to the community, my motto has always been to try and leave the world better than I found it. So in that same spirit, my question to you this week is “What kind of public art would you create in Indianapolis if money for the project was no object? Where would it be located and what would its message be?" Think about it! Answers are due no later than Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

  1. For my public art, I would create a huge colorful, vibrant, glowing crucifix and put it on chase tower so everyone can see it. A lot of people tend to forget to always keep there heads up when they're are down and most people that do keep their heads up, forget why it's up.. and the reason is because of our Lord and Savior so my public art would be a reminder of God and all the good things he does for us and to remind everyone that he is coming back and to get ready!

  2. I would make some sort of graffiti piece showing a citizen handcuffing a police officer to reverse the roles. Often times in the police brutality situations the officer brakes more laws than the innocent person that didnt use their turn signal or something. it would be a more humorous piece than serious.

  3. I think that they should have a more interactive art. Like with the painted panio's. I know that might be hard with the weather and people being stupid and ruining it for everyone else. But art like that gets people to stop and take a moment fron their phones or any other device and enjoy something that someone has given to a community. We are a nation that takes and takes till there is nothing left. I know that art can brighten anyones day. I like public art but I am very picky when it comes to stautes.

  4. I would create interactive Art that inspires people. It would be really nice to have a big open outdoors park where families and friends can come together to create beautiful art and display it wherever they want. Art is an expressive way to let out feelings in a positive way. I think an art park will become a sanctuary to most people whether they are going through a rough path in life or they just want to free their mind and explore the endless possibilities of art's mysterious beauty.

  5. If money was no object, I'd create a series of sculptures to have placed in parks. The goal of these sculptures would be to cause viewers to wonder about their purpose, and make them imagine the stories of the characters involved therein. I wouldn't want them to have any message or greater meaning, I don't want to offer any suggestion to viewers how to think or feel regarding the pieces. I would want them to be cast in bronze so they would last and get weathered with time, adding to their history.

  6. Probably sculpting owls made up of every mood. Happy, sad, upset/depressed, excited, etc. I am a huge owl person. Each person is wise, and smart, caring and have a place in the world, and I feel like if you have different owls of different moods with a quote on it, to make them feel like they aren't alone and other people have the same feelings. I don't know, that is just my thought.

  7. I would paint a canvas or I would use a side of a building to paint my idea of abstract art in many colors. In this piece there would be clouds with light and music notes trailing up to a CD with many different colored hands touching it representing unity and how music flows like Chi through our arms and body. We can communicate and come together by listening. Looking at the idea of unity can change a perspective.

  8. What I would do is a fashion show that is showing you fashion through the history. I would set it up in the middle of the side walk with a red carpet, strobe lights, red ropes along each side, and fun music through the ages. This would catch peoples attention and would make them interested.

  9. I would paint the entire Chase tower and the symbolism behind it would be to Dream Big and make those dreams a reality. There are so many creative minds in this city and I feel like they need to be told and encouraged to be whatever they wan to be.

  10. I would create an open fashion show, for everyone to just come and walk down the runway, have their picture taken then have their pictures show up on a huge projector so everyone could see. I think it would be good so that everyone could express themselves, no matter what size, color, race, gender, or age they are and feel special.

  11. I would create a painting to inspire single mothers to do better for themselves and their family. I would place this painting in front of every daycare, ccdf builldings, and just any place that a mother would see with their children. I would show a story of a single mother struggling and then once she starts to put her dreams first of going to school and getting a degree it will show how it affects her kids. It will also show the kid getting their degree as well. The purpose of this to show single mothers that it is not the end of the world when you have kids. You can still follow your dreams and achieve anything you want to. Be an example of what you wants your kids to be.

  12. I would have a fashion show in the middle of monument circle. I would have outfits inspired from the 60s on the runway. That sexual feel with the flared pants, the big hair, etc. I love the energy women had back then. They carried themselves like women.

  13. I would probably be located in Fountain Square. I would probably do something with a 50's feel, like a decorated jukebox and record players. I'd have big record players and juxeboxes made that would constantly be playing music and would be placed all around the city with painted off sections. Just to remember to live a little and enjoy the classics. To take a moment and slow down; to be able to ponder what is important and relax.

  14. I think doing something with literacy, story telling, or diversity would be cool. Something perhaps like a traveling studio where people could tell stories to a camera about their lives, or something to have to do with the city, and then it would be played in little televisions around the city and on youtube.

  15. I think it would be neat to create interactive art on the side of a building downtown. I remember a few years ago I saw a picture of a mural that encouraged people to share what they would like to do before they die. I would like to have a wall with a similar concept, but instead have them share different quotes, stories, or drawings that could provide inspiration for others whenever they pass by and look at the wall.

  16. I think I would do something with the public transportation system, aka the buses. I would change the booths to something inviting and fun all throughout the metropolitan area, including the suburbs. I feel this would make waiting for the bus more inviting and possible get more people to want to take public transportation in Indianapolis.

  17. I think I would do some sort of sculpture that didn't sit in one place for long. So the idea is kind of a where in the city is Carmen Sandiego. it wouldn't be a sculpture of her but it would be one of a fun looking cool person everyone wanted to get a pic with. So in a way it could be a game people would play downtown just to cheer them up. my message would be everyone need a break or sometimes its just good to have fun. People are always consumed and stressed out over work and school so I think that would be a good idea for the people of our community to participate in.

  18. I think for my public art piece, it would be a collection of book booths all around town. The outside sculpted to look like a giant pile of books and the inside offering a safe place to sit and read. Equipped with a scanner that reads your book preference and pulls holographic 3D model information from the book's barcode; completely immersing you in your fantasy world. A timer telling you its curfew goes off, and you were able to access a library of sorts that's a kin to watching a movie as you read your cup of tea.

  19. Huh, if money was no object I would probably get very carried away with it. I would want something that reminds people to smile and marvel at the curiosity of the world.
Perhaps a large scale fountain that has a complex water show that generates optical illusions at night through colorful lighting would be interesting.

  20. I think my art display would be a big murial of all people, different races, genders, and ages of people getting along. I think it is huge to see people come together and make art. It would be something that would have to be painted on a big wall on the outside that so that it will be seen by lots of people. The message getting across would be that people can come together and do great things if you allow yourself to do that.

  21. The art work I would create for Indianapolis would be a simple splatter paint painting. id want it located downtown, and the message id want it to send would just be to express yourself.

  22. I have been thinking and thinking of how I can get commissioned to do artwork for the city of Indianapolis. everywhere I look there are blank canvas's to be made beautiful pieces of art. Even AI, the bank walls in the stairways scream PAINT ON ME! I dont really consider myself to be a graffiti artist but if thats what the public wants then that is what i can give them. I know that there are contests that i can enter to win the right to use places and walls and landscape features as pieces of art but i have yet to come across one that I can enter. But I am very excited to try!

  23. This blog really hit home to me because i was a victim of police brutality. I believe even as a adult today that the police were wrong for throwing me and some friends around for being out of our dorm at the guardian home. There was a girl who was mentally handicapped that they smashed face first into a wall. So i think that they could go about things a lot less physical. I feel as if the only time they should be aggressive is when someone is being the same way. And there should be stronger informant in new pro-call.
