Choose Your Own Adventure!

I hope you all enjoyed a nice summer break, despite all the rain.  It's always hard coming back to school after the three week  breaks. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching and being surrounded by all the crazy, creative energy that is all of you. That being said, it's still hard to get back into the grind. So even though we have a lot to talk about this quarter, for our first blog post, I'll go easy on you.

This week we started our study of the Constitution and the freedoms that make us uniquely American. You can order your own free copy of the United States Constitution from: http://www.constitutionfacts.com/index.cfm?section=bookstore&page=freeCopy.cfm

A good portion of this class will be spent discussing current events and political issues that affect our everyday lives. For this post, I would like you to tell me at least one issue that you are interested in studying. To help you out, you can look over the blog posts that we've had in the past several years to get an idea of the type of things we've covered. Many of the topics are pretty controversial and I do my best to not censor the information available to you.

So my question to you this week is, "What is one issue that you are interested in studying in this class?" Answers are due no later than Wednesday,
Wednesday, July 22nd 2015. I'm looking forward to a great quarter!

  1. I am very interested on why we have to take down the Confederate Flag. It is something that has happened a hundred years ago and has nothing to do with people today. I believe that we should still have it up because it is hurting know body because its apart of history.

  2. People who are riding the welfare and foodstamp system when they don't need to be.

  3. I want to learn more about marriage equality. I was really happy that the law was passed. But i would like to know more about how they decided that after years and years of fighting why is it now that it was passed.

  4. I am very interested to learn more about politics and hear other peoples opinions, to have a better perspective from both sides. I am already interested in politics, so learning more about it will be fun and interesting to me.

  5. I suppose it would be interesting to learn more about gun control, and people's opinions on it. It's a subject that has such a unique connotation in the United States, and it's almost bizarre to me how heated people can get about it.
I'm sure if we learn about it I will hear perspectives I had never considered myself.

  6. I would like to learn more about work related laws/issues. I don't understand why having tattoos can disqualify you from getting a job. It is against the law to discriminate against race/color. Tattoos are color of the skin right?

  7. I'm most interested in black on black crimes... meaning, why are African Americans so quick to start riots, protests and media uproars when a caucasian man kill an African American but doesn't even bat an eye when an African American kills another African American...

  8. I would be interested in what people think of the new people running for president and what they believe, and the better candidate, etc. Marriage equality, abortion... more about everything I guess.

  9. I would like to learn more about everything we will be covering in class to expand my knowledge on historical and political issues. I'm excited about having the debates.

  10. Im interested a little more about the confederate flag. I don't really have an opinion on the situation due to not knowing the actual origin of it. Ive always been given the impression it was a racial symbol and related to the KKK. Im not one to form an opinion when i dont even know what im talking about.

  11. There are honestly a substantial amount of topics that would be interesting to hear others opinions on, since no one really has the same ideas about the same issues.
For instance, the whole praying in schools; I don't see why that is such a controversial topic. "In God We Trust" is on our currency, in our pledge of allegiance it states "...Under God..." which if you really think about it, is praying. I don't see why all of that needs to be changed because it might 'offend' someone, it's part of our country. It's part of our identity.

  14. I would like to learn more about the confederate flag, because I don't know much about it and I really don't have an opinion on it.

  17. I'd definitely be interested in learning more about these new copyright laws that are trying to be passed right now, as they apply heavily towards content creating individuals. A lot of the things I think about wanting to learn outside that, I will typically just research for myself, so I suppose I'm just ready to learn whatever you plan on teaching us and hope to get a fresh perspective on

  18. I am interested to discuss transgender issues in America. The topic has gained a lot of publicity and caused quite a bit of controversy since Caitlyn Jenner's transition. It is also a community that I support since my best friend/roommate(Mariah) is transgender.

  20. 'd really like to talk about transphobia and what it means. I would also like to talk about the stereotypes people press upon the trans community and the discrimination that comes along with it whether it be socially or or in the work force. So much is happening with the trans movement not to talk about it. Along with the trans issues I'd like to touch on gay marriage and how it really affects "Christians" and their beliefs if at all.

  21. I would like to learn more about the rise of feminism in popular culture and how it has affected and will affect feminism in the long run.

  22. I would like to go over same sex marriage. To most of us it is very new and I am glad that they passed the law in June. I want to know more of the struggles that led to successfully passing the law.

  23. I'd like to learn about the Federal government's roll vs. the State government's roll. The constitution was set up to have a limited Federal presence and each state would control themselves. This has clearly changed drastically since WWII, but how is it constitutional to have the Federal government intervene as much as it does.

Also, how America became the "Police of the World"

  24. I am interested in going over same sex marriage and how far women have come in the world when it comes to being treated as equals.

  25. Some issues I've lately been interested in are Gay Marriage and the Confederate flags being banned all over America.
