Choose Your Own Adventure!

I hope you all enjoyed our extra long break, and survived our big winter storm.  It's always hard coming back to school after break. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching and being surrounded by all the crazy, creative evergy that is all of you. That being said, it's still hard to get back into the grind. So for our first blog post, I'll go easy on you.

This week we started our study of the Constitution and the freedoms that make us uniquely American. You can order your own free copy of the United States Constitution from: http://www.constitutionfacts.com/index.cfm?section=bookstore&page=freeCopy.cfm

Normally, our first blog post has something to do with the freedoms you value most and whether or not you are proud to call yourself an American. This quarter, I would like to start with something different. A good portion of this class will be spent discussing current events and political issues that affect our everyday lives. For this post, I would like you to tell me at least one issue that you are interested in studying. To help you out, you can look over the blog posts that we've had in the past several years to get an idea of the type of things we've covered. Many of the topics are pretty controversial and I do my best to not censor the information available to you.

So my question to you this week is, "What is one issue that you are interested in studying in this class?" Answers are due no later than Sunday, January 19th, 2014. I'm looking forward to a great quarter!

  3. I liked Studying on with serious issues that, people think it's "over the top." I like putting in my opinions on those to have a good issue. And how we solve it.

  4. I have always been a little lost on, what I would call, the turning gears of the government. Certain issues in the voting process, the process of bills, laws, elections, and those sort of workings. I'd like to gain a more solid understanding of our governments processes that I might grow more interested in my involvement.

  5. I am interested in understanding what Gabriel S. said about how a lot of the bills, laws, and even the elections work. I though the three three branches of government but I think of a more understanding of a step by step process and maybe an overview of how the government works out agreement like when the Government was shut down. Why was that an option and why was it considered the best option for the issues caused? I guess a break down of what happened and why would be interesting to talk about for the class.

  6. Similar to what Cory and Gabriel said, I am not familiar with how the government functions as a whole. I would like to find out how the government responds to particular situations like natural disasters and terrorist attacks. I would like to learn about the organizations responsible for responding to such emergencies and what exactly is the process to go about that.

  7. I would like to know why people in foreign countries think that it is okay to pawn off their children to men and women that will abuse them. I don't believe in human trafficking, sex trafficking, or drug trafficking. It is a crime and I want to know what we can do us a country to stop it. Also, I would like to know about people in foreign countries that also think it's okay to put their young children to work in the industry of making clothes, accessories, and etc.

  8. I want to talk about the new health care laws, I want to understand them and why they're in place the way they are.
I also would like to learn more about the labor laws? About the new restrictions on work hours and businesses providing health care to all full time employees.

  9. I would like to understand more about how the government reacts in certain situations as well as why they make students learn the things that we have to learn in school that are "mandatory" classes.

  10. I would like to discuss Human Rights. I remember learning about them vaguely through middle and high school, but they never really stuck with me. I'm really interested especially since now it seems that our "freedoms" are being taken away. I know that the first one is that we are all equal and free when we're born. If that is so, then why is Indiana and the United States in a big quarrel about gay marriage? I am pro gay marriage and don't see anything wrong with it. But if we're all equal, shouldn't they have the freedom to get married just like anyone else? Definitely a hot topic that I'd really like to discuss!

  11. i would like to discuss/understand more about the health insurance thing that's happening now in our government and why is it such a big deal about the Obama care. this is something i definitely would like to learn more about !

  12. the topic that i would like to cover and go over in this class is "Gay Marriage". because i feel like that is a really open topic in the world today, cause a lot of people have a lot of different opinions on this specific topic and i would love to hear ever body individual in the class feels about the topic

  13. I would like to study a little of everything. Maybe a little more political issues. Such as gay marriage, Obamacare, and many other things.

  14. I agree with the first few posts about the government's process. I'm always intrigued when people say they hate the president because he doesn't do what he promises, when really, it seems a president can try to pass a bill but Congress shuts that bill or idea down. The president is not the most powerful man in the government. Also, I heard there are members of congress with arrest records and felonies... they are still deciding the fate of our country? I understand anything can go away with enough money but can we not get them out of their position?
Like many, I'm also curious about health insurance. What little I have read about it says that younger people are essential to the Affordable Healthcare Act succeeding, yet we weren't informed of its details very well. And it's just as expensive as rent for most of us, so many in their twenties are opting to pay the penalty instead of signing up for now.
I also think it would be great if we can touch on the food industry and food laws (e.g., GMO's, why companies can advertise all-natural or organic when they aren't, etc.).
Finally, I just want to know about any current issue that we can influence it's outcome.

  17. I would like to learn about the government shut down. What was the real reason why the government shut down and if there were any government shut downs in the past.

  18. As a personal yearly sufferer of power outages, I would appreciate it if we could discuss what makes effective responses to events (both natural and man made, disasterous and in home nuisances) and how to better prevent and react to them. Government aid or no.

  19. I'm interested in the story of Edward Snowden and the National Security and the issues that have been brought to light because of the incident...also refresh my knowledge of the checks and balances of the three branches of Government and how the pros and cons of the electoral college

  20. I'm interested in studying about the government, and how they run things. Also why did we have a government shut down, and was it a major issue for the united states.

  21. I would like to discuss climate change. The weather patterns have been rapidly getting more violent the past couple years. If the storms and earthquakes continue to get worse how will we be prepared as a nation to handle these issues?

  23. Also how entertainment effects our generation...

  24. I am interested in the benefits of a two party system. I have always wondered why, as a nation, we feel comfortable being pigeonholed into only 2 boxes based on "big issues" that rarely effect the majority of the population. Analyzing our government as a whole and simply gaining more understanding about its actions and how it affects the nation.

  25. im interested in studying the real problems in American government not just what the media throws at us it just depresses me so bad to see our time a resources wasted on useless actor propaganda instead of the real issues at hand.

  26. In this course I'd like to learn more about rape culture and how this stigma effects victims of rape/ sexual abuse. These stigmas can be emotionally damaging and it happens to both men and women, and the only way it can really get better is if we can recognize them and stop them.

  27. Environment. As a human being we are put on this earth with one priority, to survive. As a citizen in a civilized nation, we later learn that our survival is dependent on various developments and adaptations. I am mostly interested in studying the environment because it is a continuous concern when we consider what affects we have made when learning how to meet out survival needs. I would love to study how firms have created better preventatives for our wastes and disposal. I am regularly concerned with what I put back into the environment, For instance, whenever a huge appliance needs repair or has been damaged, my main objective is determining an alternative use for the appliance until another appliance is found to replace it, or the object has been repaired. Another example of my environmentally conscience decision is whenever batteries or light bulbs die, I collect the needed disposals until I find its appropriate recycle bin. My examples are only meant to emphasis my passion for the appropriate removal of misused products. I would have interest and look forward to find out about projects and programs designated to distribute these responsibilities. I would like to study the numerous cases that enacted the government to regulate how companies fulfill their quality control for their customers and when products have denigrated to its smallest matter. Also, I think it is important to distinguish the fraudulent persecutors who think they are above and can get through the holes and their consequences.
