How Do You Like Them Apples?

You may have heard recently that the FBI has requested that Apple help the FBI unlock the iPhone of the San Bernardino terrorists.  If you’re like me, you may be wondering why the FBI needs Apple to unlock the phone.  (Seriously – the FBI can’t hack into an IPhone?!) Apparently, the phone’s security measures have prevented the FBI from being able to access what may or may not be critical evidence in the San Bernardino case.

Apple has refused to help create any software that would circumvent the phone’s security measures, stating in part that, “helping the FBI unlock this phone will be setting a dangerous precedent for everyone’s cybersecurity.”  Apple feels the new software could possibly leak, and entice hackers to modify and/or breach the system on their own, thus weakening the security of all its products.
For their part, the FBI has stated that if Apple isn’t compelled to help it will be the equivalent of creating “evidence-free” zones, thus empowering terrorists even further.  Both sides have taken their case to Congress this week.

Since we will be studying 1st Amendment Freedoms this week in class, which includes freedom of speech, I thought this seemed like a good case to blog about.  In this age of “terrorism,” it seems we must often choose between our own security versus our civil liberties.  So my question to you this week is, “Do you think Apple should be forced to develop software that could help the FBI access iPhone data?  Are you willing to give up some of your freedoms if it means making our country safer?”  You must answer both questions for full credit.  Answers are due no later than Wednesday, March 9th, 2016.

  1. Absolutely not!!!! Apple should do whatever they feel is best for them, they are looking at the bigger picture, not just ONE problem. I will not and am not willing to give up my freedoms for no one. whatever happens is suppose to happen. The F.B.I. I feel is just using this as an excuse to get more deeper in our business, that is all.

  2. On one hand I feel like I have nothing to hide, on the other I want to protect my basic freedoms and privacy. I don't think the FBI should be able to access really anyone's information without a court order. I think Apple has every right to protect the privacy of their customers and I think this is a huge statement they are making.

  3. First and foremost i want to state that the FBI is asking Apple for help not because they cant do it on their own. I am sure the FBI has the resources and the know how to hack the Iphones. I think the reason they are asking for the companies help is to have a scapegoat per say, not because they cant hack the system. I think they just don't want people to know they hacked the phones. If people with Apple products or even if Apple found out that the FBI hacked the phones than there would most likely be an uproar and in the public and probably some lawsuits. By asking the company to release the security of their product the FBI is covering their own ass. Anyways enough of that now to answer the blog, i think that Apple should not be forced to develop a software. I think the government is going to do what it wants but i personally am not willing to give up my freedoms. Although if Apple complies with the FBI i don't really care since i have no Apple products at all, I think they are way over priced and are nothing special. K THANX BYE

  4. I think regardless even if the FBI was allowed the terrorist would find other ways of communication. So regardless i don't think Apple should allow this to happen because they will lose costumers.

  5. Negative. I am not willing to give up my privacy of my phone or laptop just because the FBI is having a fit. Why can't they hack the phone?! If Apple did agree to hack the phone, then the FBI would keep coming back and wanting them to do more. Then, there goes our privacy.

  8. No apple should not help the FBI because the government has more tech along with other company's. No I not willing to give up my freedom or rights for the FBI or other law informant because then they can charge me for criminals that I have not done. (jonathan hall)

  9. I don't think that Apple should help the FBI. I think that once this software is made they will use it for more than just trying to find terrorists. I think that the FBI could probably do it themselves. If they really think that someone is a terrorist, and have enough evidence, than I think they would be able to get a court order to look through someones phone. I personally don't want to give up my freedoms or rights for the FBI just to have an IPhone.

  10. I personaly think that Apple should have their own say in what the company wants to do. If they can come to an agreement, great. As for "giving up" freedom my freedom for a safer country. I think the FBI should be looking at gaming consoles that can have privet chats and such. Needless to say I think there looking into the wrong area, but their not wasting there time. I'm sure their is codes or what not that the "other people" are using. Also I have nothing to hide so maybe the FBI should be more concerned about the people who don't want their phones checked.

  11. No! I feel like Apple stated, if apple creates a software that can then open phones this not only invades our privacy but also can lower my business sales if I'm one of the owners of apple! The FBI should have access to opening their phone they have access to everything else!

  12. I also feel this gives hackers that are involved in terrorists acts an open door for weak software to be hacked. HOLD YOUR GROUNDS APPLE!

  13. I think Apple is in the right here, it seems like the are not only looking out for themselves but as well as the future for all of us and the right for us to feel like we are safe. I for one would like to keep on to whatever privacy I can have because in this day in age everything is open to the public and that is a very scared idea, especially if that information gets into the wrong hands. Plus its not apple problem to unlock a phone, they have spent a lot of time and money to make sure their sh*t doesn't f**k up and that has also built a reputation in that brand and I don't think they want to spend the time and energy to undo all that work.

  14. One side of believes that apple should do it but in all honesty I have to say no. Apple is right hackers would have a field day with this if they found and stole a program that could do that. I don;t want to give up my freedom because I've been asking a friend who studies hackers what he think and after talking to him we both came up this answer. Hackers today you don't know who side they are on asking me give away my freedom is similar to how hackers take information about you. In the end even if it's selfish anybody would be afraid to just have all their information easy to access.

  15. I honestly feel like there should be a soft ware that can cypher though conversations because of situations like this, but the government should only be alerted if something serious or threatening occurs. And I think i would be willing to give up some freedoms if it is to ensure the safety of our country.

  16. I believe that this is a bad idea we deserve to have our privacy. Apple should not let the FBI have our information its just like when someone is hacking information from anywhere. Yes it might sound like a good idea but who really would let all there information to be let out for other people to see.

  17. I have a strong belief in privacy. Privacy is very important. I feel that there should be other ways to solve FBI problems. I will never respect Apple again even though I dont have a I phone but I have a Mac book. America would go crazy if that happens.

  18. I think Apple should link up with the FBI ONLY to get into phones that they are positive are linked to murders and other serious crimes, but then again they shouldn't have access because I think he FBI will abuse the use of the software and become very nosey in people's life. In my opinion the FBI already has access to our phones. I would not give up my freedom for them to have a right to go through my phone, because everyone is not doing criminal acts on their phone.

  19. No I do not think that the FBI should be allowed to force them to do this. I am pretty sure that they can do it on they own or probably already have. I am also not willing to give up my rights in the name of national security. The more rights we let them take away the more we are moving toward a police state.

  20. No I don't think apple should be force to developed that software.you know what I believe they already are tapping and using information on us.so I would not give up my freedom just to make the world a little more safer.
