Choose Your Own Adeventure!

I hope you all enjoyed a nice winter break.  It's always hard coming back to school after the three week  breaks. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching and being surrounded by all the crazy, creative energy that is all of you. That being said, it's still hard to get back into the grind. So for our first blog post, I'll go easy on you.

This week we started our study of the Constitution and the freedoms that make us uniquely American. You can order your own free copy of the United States Constitution from: http://www.constitutionfacts.com/index.cfm?section=bookstore&page=freeCopy.cfm

A good portion of this class will be spent discussing current events and political issues that affect our everyday lives. For this post, I would like you to tell me at least one issue that you are interested in studying. To help you out, you can look over the blog posts that we've had in the past several years to get an idea of the type of things we've covered. Many of the topics are pretty controversial and I do my best to not censor the information available to you.

So my question to you this week is, "What is one issue that you are interested in studying in this class?" Answers are due no later than Wednesday,
January 28th 2014. I'm looking forward to a great quarter!

  1. I am not a fan of historical and political issues, more in the way of never even paying attention to it. So nothing really interest me to want to study in this class.

  2. I'm interested in the welfare system, I really don't understand it, and I may sound dumb when saying that I think most people miss use it, same as unemployment, but I don't read about these things, so it would be nice to understand more of what all of it's about.

  3. I'm really interested in the paris situation, I just only recently heard about it, due the ending of the colbert report (sadness) but I hope to learn more

    1. Any good sites where I can read about that further?

  4. I like to talk about the separation of religion and the state... I'm one of the people that feel our beliefs should not be involved in politics, other people feel differently which is great, I have never had a bad conversation in this topic. Or just anything that deals with gay rights, women's rights, and even how it seems that rights are being taken away. These kind of "rights" topics need to be addressed when they come up because they are important. I think that it's needless to take a person's rights away in the first place. I like political issues anyway being as that I like to involve myself in the issues to grow an opinion so thati can make an educated decision come voting / election time.

  5. I usually don't pay attention to politics, but I like to hear about historical things. I took the sociology class last quater, so I would understand well in this class based on lat quater's experience.
Since I like to listen what people think and react, I think I like this class.

  6. Like Ron Lewis, I'm interested in discussing the recent situation in Paris. I admit I don't really know much about it at the moment, but since it's a very recent event I feel it would be good to discuss.

  7. I honestly try my best to steer away from politics. I'm not a fan of debating topics. Mainly because I get super angry, haha. There are many topics out there that have my interest though and I look forward to learning more about them!

  8. One issue that I think its very important for the entire class to learn about is net neutrality. Cable companies are trying to start charging websites fees in order for them to run properly, and the sites that don't pay will load slowly and become harder to access. If we lose net neutrality, the internet will never be the same. This is a world wide issue that the majority of people I know know nothing about. Voters should be aware of such big changes and do what they can to stop them. You can learn more about and help preserve net neutrality at the link below!

  9. I have been disconnected from a lot of what has been going on in the world, on the account of I haven't had cable until recently. I am really excited for this class and I hope I can catch up on current events.

  10. One issue I think the class should discuss as a whole is the new rule before abortion. I guess in certain states and almost all states they are forcing women to get an ultrasound before abortion if they decide to abort a miracle. Don't get me wrong, babies are miracles from God but I kind of disagree with this because if a woman decides to abort a baby that is HER choice and there should be no ifs, ands, or buts. I get why they are doing this, but I think if a woman decides to abort a growing child inside of her that seeing it on a screen might not change her mind like people may think. It's not that I am for or against abortion I just think if a woman makes that choice she shouldn't be put through obstacles to where she feels forced to keep it. I think this issue would interest other students to learn about. It sure does grab my attention.

  11. i think i would be very interested in doing historical and political issues one reason why is because i always have something to say. Plus i love history in politics. i would like to talk about the struggles that are going on in the country today, like job employment, and also domestic partnership. i'm willing to learn about anything about politics, since i love to learn different things and also i'm a open minded person. i wouldn't mind learning things new in this class, so i hope i will enjoy this class.

  12. well i'm not really into the whole historical and political issues one of my least favorite subjects but, i would like to learn more about the events that is going on in the world that they don't notify us about which we should be informed about as citizens. We care too. well I mean i do.

  13. Despite the fact that I am not as knowledgeable in terms of political issues, I do find many aspects of it to be extremely interesting. I'd like to explore Statistical Comparisons of US Presidential Terms, in the last two decades. I find it interesting to resesrch which Presidents were deemed not only popular amongst citizens, but successfull and why....

  14. I am interested into learning about vaccines.Personally, I am not comfortable putting harsh chemicals in my body unless it is extremely necessary. I have a few friends that are mothers and are concerned with all the vaccines doctors are giving to their children. I don't know a lot about what vaccines are standard for children to go to school and I feel many parents aren't sure what chemicals are put into their children bodies. I feel that all these vaccines can be overwhelming for many people especially children. I am excited to continue to learn and feel this class will be a great source to stay on top of trending political events.

    1. The Sanctity of Human Blood : Vaccination is Not Immunization is a good book on this issue. This webpages includes a few of the topics summered by the author Tim O'Shea - http://www.whale.to/vaccines/shea1.html#Vaccination_Certainly_Does_Not_Guarantee_Immunity._

“Unfortunately, the partnership between government health agencies and vaccine manufacturers is getting closer and closer. There is a lot of discrimination against Americans, who want to be free to exercise their human right to informed consent when it comes to making voluntary decisions about which vaccines they and their children use.”

It is sad to see a "Nanny State" in collusion with "Big Phara" try to dictate what we (out of our own freewill) place into our bodies and those that decide not to are shamed by bandwagon political correctness. It is not the government place to dictate our personal choices!

  15. I'm not very educated on a lot of political topics, and personally I think an uneducated opinion is worse than no opinion, because if you don't know what you're talking about, why are you talking?

But one topic I'd like to openly discuss in class is gender equality and the real definition of the word "feminism". A lot of people define this word as bra burning, men hating, scary extremists. There is a word for women who hate men and it isn't feminist, it's misandrist. Feminism just means people (not just women) trying to advocate women to be equals to men. It's horrible that a word has such negative connotation. Feminists just want to empower men and women to treat women in the same respects as men are treated. It's not about tearing men down, it's about improving the way women are treated. The more people who know this the less negativity around the word "feminism" will have and the closer we will get to achieving equality.

  16. I believe race plays a major role in this country still. I believe people can see others as a color and not as the person they are. I tend to have a "hippie" type belief system and don't judge a book by it's cover. I'm excited to have this class and listen to others thoughts and opinions.

  17. Im interested in learning about more on the war on drugs, particularly the sale and use of marijuana. With the laws that are in place now they make it seem like a little marijuana is as bad as domestic abuse or murder. I want to know why the current laws are so harsh and strict for a little green plant that has very little negative side effects. Honestly I think the government trying to keep it illegal in most states to keep medicine made in a lab prices so high. It's all bout the money for these pharmaceutical companies, that should put more research into developing the beneficial effects of marijuana.

  18. (Take 3) im interested in the division of wealth, poverty, and things like that. I usually try to keep my head in the sand when it comes to politics because it seems like every opinion you have is taken as an attack on someone's way of life and I'm not very confrontational sooooo, yeah, but this is an issue that's everywhere. I can't ignore it.

  21. I am concerned with the erosion of our civil liberties. Eisenhower warned of an military-industrial complex 54 years ago, now add to that the surveillance and police state. Instead of a bastion of freedom and liberty, we seem to be ensnared into something reminiscent of what Huxley termed a "scientific dictatorship" controlled by an oligarchy. This is maintained through a false left-right paradigm who control the public with trivial divisive issues through the media , sedation by pharmaceuticals, and dependence on debt. Crony capitalism has replaced free-markets as there is a revolving door between the government and corporations.

  22. Ok 5th try at trying to post this... >:(
I am very interested in politics and want to learn as much as i can about any issue. A few that I am very interested in are, the wage gap and whether it still exists in america. How the rest of the world views America. I also want to learn more about trans rights and how they have evolved throughout the years, I'm honestly EXTREMELY interested in any LGBTQA issues. I'd also like to learn more about how Americas gun control( or lack there of) laws compare to the rest of the world. I think an important issue to learn about is globalization and how that is going to affect our future and later generations.

  23. While I'm not very interested in politics, I do enjoy learning about history from time to time. However, I'm not entirely sure what I would like to learn more about.

  24. I really don't have an issue that I'm interested in but I will be interested in whatever we study about in class.

  25. I would like to be involved in politics more than I'm right now although I do follow the news often. I'm glad I'm taking this class and hope it will expend my horizon and make me a well rounded person. One of the topics that I would like to cover is the war on terror and ISIS because it is everywhere in the world and is becoming more of a problem, therefore I feel like it would be a good topic to learn about.
