Giving Thanks!

It's been a weird quarter.  From having my class switched to Tuesday nights, to needing a sub two weeks (thank you, Steve!) to missing another week due to Veteran's day, I feel like it has been a crazy quarter.  Don't gt me wrong - I enjoy missing class every now and then as much as you do, but as an instructor, it always makes it hard to catch up.

Now, I have made it clear in class that Thanksgiving is not my favorite holiday. I don't like the way schools fictionalize a story that sounds good, while ignoring the sad facts about how we really treated Native Americans in this country. That being said, I have learned to treat Thanksgiving as a reminder of all the things I am thankful for.

This year, as always, I am thankful for my faith, my family and my friends.  I'm healthy and generally happy, and I am surrounded by people who love me. I have two jobs that I really enjoy, and a great class this quarter.  Yes - when all is said and done, I have it pretty good.  I hope I never lose sight of that, and always continue to be thankful for what I have.

So, in honor of the holiday my question to you this week will be an easy one. "What are you thankful for this holiday season?" Answers are due no later than Monday, December 2nd, 2014.  I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday full of good food, good friends and good conversation! Enjoy your break!

P.S.  And for those of you who are wondering....she's having a boy!  My little nephew is due to arrive in early April, and I'm already in love with him!  Just one more thing I'm thankful for!

  2. Yeah that's so exciting about the baby! Boys seem like they would be fun to have around, all my family has are girls. I am thankful for my family, no matter how far we can all move away from each other we are still so very close. I'm thankful for my friends that have been around for years and are so caring, and all the new friends I have made since I started school. I'm also thankful for the little community I am from, this year has shown a lot of struggles for our little town and everyone has been there for everybody. I hope you have an awesome thanksgiving.

  3. I am thankful for a lot of things. My family and friends mostly. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to finish my education. I think what I am most thankful for though is the grunts, dog faces, squids and fly boys that sacrificed their lives to keep our country free. Many people take for granted what military personnel endure to make sure they have the freedoms they have. Imagine being in a foreign country, thousands of miles from home on the holidays. You have your brothers and sisters that are also serving with you, but your parents, siblings, spouse and children are all back in the states missing you and worrying about you. That brings a severe stress to them and the soldier. Just be thankful for what you have and always remember, if were not for the people serving in the military, we wouldn't have the freedoms to do what we want to do. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. Yea, I said Merry Christmas. I don't care who that offends.

  4. While Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday of the year, I'm not ignorant to the true meaning and story behind the inception of this holiday. I'll be the first to admit how hypocritical I am saying I love Thanksgiving, but still celebrate it despite it being based on the genocide of Native Americans. If everyone truly cared that this is what Thanksgiving, our own country, and many more holidays are based on, we wouldn't stand for it, let alone celebrate it; but that's America for you.

Anyway! Regardless of my personal views on the holiday in particular, I do like to reflect upon what I am truly thankful for in the life that I have. I love my family and my friends so much and am constantly thankful for having them in my life to support my dreams and aspirations. I am also thankful for having a great education. I truly love going to a school where I can major in a field I'm happy in and proud to be apart of. Although I wish it COST LESS, I am thankful for it nonetheless. :) Lastly, I'm thankful to anyone or anything that gives me inspiration and imagination. From the work of my peers to everything the world has to offer, without that giant source of inspiration I would be lost.

    Congratulations on the nephew!!! :)

  5. I had so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving It was my birthday so I was thankful to see another year in my life. I was also thankful that I got to take off time from both jobs just so that I can spend time with my friends and family for my birthday and for Thanksgiving. Being able to spend the holidays with your loved ones and see their progress and growth while keeping up with traditions is what I believe Thanksgiving is all about.

  6. I'm first thankful for my family. They have always been there for me no matter what the situation may be, my parents especially. My mom and dad will do anything for me and my brothers no matter what it is. I am also thankful for my friends who are often there when I have problems that I can not share with my parents and who are very accepting.

  7. November in general is not my favourite month, i lost my dad 5 years ago, only a week and some days away from thanksgiving, so it is always hard to celebrate the holiday with being reminded of his death. Even though he is gone I'm always thankful he was an amazing person, taught me a lot and always loved and embraced life like no other person i know.
I am very thankful for my mom, she is the reason I am the person I am today. She is a very strong woman with a very kind and gentle heart and never gives up on anything, i love her very much. I am also thankful for my sisters, God couldn't have provided me with the perfect family. We may fight and bicker here and there but at the end of the day blood is thicker than water. Last but not least, I am thankful for all my friends. They are family, a family i had the opportunity of choosing for myself. My family is not here in the US but i'm glad i meet and made an additional family.
I AM THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE AND TO BE ABLE TO USE ALL MY FIVE SENSES, IT IS A BLESSING.

  8. I am thankful for everything. I cant really say anything specific because everything that has happened to me I have either took as a blessing or a lesson. I can honestly say that my boyfriend has been the most supportive with a lot of things with me being in school working and myself trying to start my own photography business. My mom has been here for me as well, giving me guidance and advice through a lot of things. Im just thankful to have those two in my life to help me through a lot of the struggles I go through, As well to see another day each day I wake up.

  9. I am thankful for how blessed I am to have a healthy family, have a home, and having the potential to make it somewhere in life. I am able to feed myself and I have a roof over my head, which is extremely underappreciated by most people. While I like to complain about being a poor college student, which in many aspects I am, at least I have a bed to sleep in and pizza rolls lining my freezer. I'm also thankful that while the art institute probably isn't the best education I could be getting, it's an education that I can use for a better future.

  10. I am thankful for my health, family, friends, my dogs and my new church home. Although my family and friends often get on my nerves I am so thankful to have them in my life. I am also thankful that I am able to further my education. My 2 jobs are a blessing but I am so hungry for just one job that will satisfy my financial need and keep my interest. I struggle sometimes with money and my sleepless schedule but I am so thankful for it all because of the lessons I have learned and will continue to learn through it all.

  11. I am thankful for my family, even though we're going through some rough times right now. I am thankful for the home that my mom has provided for my sister and I. I am thankful for my job, even though it's not that well-paying. I am thankful for my health. I am thankful that I am able to go to college and pursue my education in interior design. I'm thankful for my car for giving me reliable transportation. I am thankful for my boyfriend who is completely selfless to me and supports me through everything.
I am thankful that I can go through life with the freedoms that I am given.

  12. I'm definitely thankful for my faith, family, and the best band in the world, PARAMORE. *strums air guitar*. My family is great. We're all supportive of each other and we're all loveable people. Some people might think it's dumb to put all my faith into a band but they haven't let me down yet. We definitely have an understanding and love for each other, we keep each other going. I have infinite love and thankfulness for Paramore. Yep, yep.

  13. While I do not really celebrate the "holiday" of thanksgiving, I am thankful for my mom who was and is always there for me on my ups and downs, by being the shoulder I need to cry on or the hug giver when I had a good day. I am also thankful for the oppurtunities to make up for past mistakes.

  16. I am thankful for my parents, because they always encourage me to do the right thing. Also because they let me take a chance at AI, because if they wouldn't of I wouldn't be learning to do what I love. I am also thankful for my instructors who teach me to be the best I can be once I get out in the real world and fulfill my career.

  18. I am thankful for the many opportunities that have came my way these past couple months! Things are definitely look up & onto the future and I couldn't be happier. I am also thankful for the people that surround me and support me through everything. My family, friends, co workers, and my boyfriend. I don't know what I would do with them! So much to be thankful for this year!

  19. Congratulation on your nephew!!!

I am thankful for having gotten the opportunity to live and study in the US. It is not uncommon for people in Denmark to travel and study abroad, but it is very uncommon to be able to do it without your parents being millionaires.
I am so thankful for having found a school where I feel like I belong and can prosper everyday!
I am also thankful for my friends and family and that I and everyone i know are healthy right now. I am thankful for Ai, the students, the teachers and everything I have learned so far.

I am thankful everyday for my dog Eddie, who I rescued from a shelter 2 years ago. He ended up saving me much more than I saved him!

  21. I am thankful for my security and steady life with school and home. Im thankful both of my parents are fine and healthy, and that they raised me with an open mind and passionate heart. Also I am glad I have a chance to do something great by coming to the Art Institute. I am thankful I have been healthy my whole life without getting a serious virus or cancer. And that I have made good friends.

  22. I am thankful all my friends and family are well. I went home for the holidays. I had the craziest week. The morning before Thanksgiving my friend woke up and then passed out. She didn't wake up for two minutes. Her husband called for help. I called 911 and later on we found out she had a bleeding ulcer. It got fixed thank goodness and she is fine and well. I know this post is delayed but I'm just thankful everything went well last week it was crazy.

  23. I think that everything that has been going on with the Ferguson, Missouri is way over the top. Are all the riots really necessary? The burning of the American Flag in some places? I think some people are over reacting and it's turning into one big mess. My father was an Indiana State Police officer for many years and never once had I ever felt threatened by anything I heard or saw back then.
In today's world, I am beginning to see that some police think they have a higher reign over the people and take the power a bit out of context (Alabama Incident). I believe in self-defense without a doubt, but I am beginning to think that our so called "law enforcement" is taking it a little bit too far.
