Crisis in Iraq

As I mentioned in a previous post, several weeks ago President Obama authorized airstrikes against ISIS – an al-Qaeda offshoot that has been on a terrorist campaign throughout Syria and Iraq.  ISIS has been carrying out mass executions, placing heads on fence posts and imposing harsh religious restrictions all in an effort to gain an Islamic state governed by a religious figurehead.  You may have recently seen the public online broadcast of the beheading of American journalist James Foley.  Seriously horrible stuff – and it gets even worse.  Consider these numbers as reported by the Huffington Post:
  • 1,922 – The number of people killed in Iraq in June, making it the deadliest month since May of 2007.  A majority were civilian.
  • 30,000 – 50,000 – The number of militants now fighting with ISIS.
  • $2 billion – The approximate value of ISIS cash and assets after looting hundreds of millions of dollars from Iraqi banks.
  • 0 – the number of openly practicing Christians thought to be left in Mosul after ISIS made Christianity punishable by death.
Now I’m not one to condone violence, by us or by them.  While I support our troops and the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country, I’ve never thought the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were going to end terrorism.  I’m not sure what the answer is, but I generally believe that violence just results in more violence. That being said, the nightly news is starting to sounds more like a recap of a Games of Thrones episode, and I know something must be done.

So, my question to you this week is, “How should the United States handle the ISIS crisis in Iraq?  Would you support military action, including sending more troops?  Does the U.S. have a responsibility to end the violence?”  You must answer all questions to earn full credit. Answers are due no later than Wednesday, September 3rd.  Have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!

  1. The war in the middle east has gone on probably since the begging of organized religion. It will go on long after we are all gone. Things may be different if they were to eat Oreo cookies, watch cable and have regular sex frequently. After all they are hot and miserable in what I consider the Earths asshole. We should obliterate any foreign power that trys to harm any US assets what so ever. No questions asked period.

  2. We don't negotiate with terrorist, everyone knows that so I don't really know what we can handle anything going on there, its frustrating and a horrible situation. US and Iraq are different cultures obviously so in my opinion it's craziness for us to run over there with more troops. like Bill said above, this war on religion has been going on since religion even began so why and how would we make a difference. This might sound harsh but I don't think it's a good idea to send a bunch of troops over. it's crazy to me. and I dont feel like it's our responsibility to end the violence. I think the US butts into to everything already and it get us into trouble so much so we cant be the big annoying brothers 24/7.

  3. First of all the United States should have pulled away from war a long time ago, but us being the BIG DOGS we cant seem to keep our noses out of everyone elses business and feel we always have to do something. We should have seriously taken some lessons from Tony Blair, at least he had some sense to know when enough was enough. Now that were deeper in the ISIS crisis we should send in serious flanks around the vicinity of the ISIS grounds and just execute tthem all to save the innocent from being killed. Till this day I still do not believe that we belong over there and I dont think we should keep sending troops over to fight. But since were therer now we might as well end it there and pack up and leave. The U.S. is not responsible for anything over there except of our troops and civilians.

  4. Since day one I wasn't a supporter of the wars because like someone said, violence only promotes and starts more violence. The US seems to have to be the dominant country over everyone and not just let issues that are with different parts of the world pan out for themselves. The war on religion has been going on since the beginning of time and if it hasn't stopped yet, it won't end. Sending more troops over there is stupid. What will that solve? More unnecessary deaths of our troops and adding on a new debt. Terrorists are not going to stop if we send more troops, they are just going to get worse. I get we want to show that terrorism is awful and something needs to be done but we have so many other cultures and countries hate us because we are trying to run the world. Life doesn't work that way and never will. The Isis group needs to just be executed though so since we have people over there already we should just put them to work, get rid of the ridiculous problem that that group is causing and end our involvement overseas, (wars and sending more troops).

  5. The United States should handle the ISIS crisis in Iraq without violence because I would definitely agree that the violence would cause more violences and we don’t need that. I wouldn’t support the military action, because were losing many troops over wars. Losing countless lives fighting for our country is really horrible. I feel like the U.S doesn’t have the responsible for the ending of violence. Every time when another country is in need were there for help, but there’s no way that it can end the violence. Were just losing many of our troops over seas for those wars.

  6. The moment US said the war in Iraq was over it should have been over. If the Iraq troops don't have the balls to keep their country safe after US being there for over 10 years then its their fault for acting like the French. The US should not send more troops over there because it should not have been our business anymore and the US is not responsible for ending violence, the problem with that is the US think they can end all violence going on in the world, but no matter what anyone tries to do to bring peace, violence and war will keep going until we all finally destroy each other and the only living things on this earth will be cockroaches. So US should spot sticking their noses were it doesn't belong. As for ISIS they just want to make this real personnel by also killing unarmed Americans so to that I say just go to a full blown air strike and destroy every coward in that country until they beg for mercy, and when they do just send them to extinction. We don't need to take anymore of this crap. We have other problems to fix. KILL THEM ALL!!

  7. The ISIS crisis in Iraq should not be thought of as strictly a United States issue. This situation would be better handled by the United Nations. Right now the United States is conducting air strikes in Iraq in an attempt to handle the ISIS crisis. Unfortunately, all that is doing is racking up collateral damage and possible civilian casualties in an already war torn country. However, I think that NOT going to Iraq is not going to help those who are directly affected by ISIS in Iraq. Putting boots on the ground in Iraq is not about promoting violence in another country. It is about helping the people of Iraq continue to rebuild their economy and their communities as well as protecting their freedoms as fellow human beings.

You could also think of this situation from a strategic standpoint and see how “putting our noses” in this business is beneficial for the United States. If ISIS is allowed to grow unchecked and succeeds in taking Iraq, then who is next? What country will they take over next? It is not in our best interest to allow a group like ISIS to become powerful. It is in the best interest of the United States to stop this problem while it is small. Maybe we will not be able to stop terrorism but we sure as hell can make is difficult for them to organize.

  8. I'm sorry but we still haven't fixed our problems here in America and we're trying to take care of other people, i have no problem with the military but this crisis just sounds like a way for a guy in the white house trying to boost his popularity. However ISIS could be a problem if left unchecked and we should do something what that something is i don't know.

  9. I feel that the United States should be doing everything in their power to put a stop to this ISIS madness. Onside ring, how I do not agree with the United States getting involved in overseas conflicts I would completely support them taking action to this issue! I do feel that it is the United States responsibility to take action and end this.

  10. I think the United states should stay out of Iraq because even if we stop ISIS, another terrorist group will emerge. The United States does not have any obligations to end violence. The United States seems to think that its their responsibility to intervene in another countries problems.

  11. I do support the US going in with military troops. These terrorist must be stopped and yes we do have an obligation to stop it. The only way to handle it is to crush it. History has shown us that unless we crush, not suppress or attempt to control, that whey will surely expand their efforts to conquer as many people as possible.

  12. I support military action and I do think the U.S. has a responsibility to end the violence. I'm not 100% sure of all the details of what's going on, as I'm just starting to learn about the situation, but from what I've heard, it's pretty intense and terrifying, and they need to do something. I don't know what they should do in particular, but I'm hoping they figure it out soon.

  13. I support military action, I kind of have to some of my family members and my boyfriend are in the military, but I do not want them going back out their risking their lives. It scares me. I do think the united states should try to handle the ISIS situation in a non violent way to get them to stop or try to make a peaceful negotiation so everything can go back to normal. I think the US has a part in stopping the violence. I mean it is our people they are hurting, so we should do something about it.

  14. The ISIS situation should be handled smartly. Knowing that the other areas around the ISIS conflict like Iran and Syria, we could send a reasonable amount of troops along with those countries to team up and deal with this group. The U.S. has a responsibility in handling this situation, seeing as though the hostages were American, but other than that, they shouldnt start an all out war.

  15. I actually support the military action because I have family members who are still in the military, or has previously served. I do feel that the US should handle the ISIS in a non violent matter to keep from making matters worst and try to keep the peace within our Country.

  16. It sucks to say this but I have a hard time trusting when I hand the money to an organization or an individual. I'm more inclined to go towards the organization though. I've seen a guy that's panhandling everyday at the same corner as if it's a job off before. I don't want to seem cold hearted. And as to responding. I usually don't have cash on me so that's usually the response. But i guess I've just had bad experiences. Like trying to walk into walmart and get bumbarded. I think signs like the one u mentioned needa to be advertised more. And I've seen videos of awareness on FB and IG that are amazing for awareness and more of those wouldn't hurt

As much as I hate violence and the thought of having to send more troops, I think it is necessary in this situation. This is very serious and it needs to stop by whatever means necessary. It think it is the U.S.'s responsibility now that they have attacked Americans.
