The Mile High City May Be Higher Than We Think - Part 2

This week, I traveled to Denver, Colorado for business.  I’ve been before and have always enjoyed my time there, but this was the first time I’ve been since they legalized marijuana. Colorado’s law legalizing the drug for recreational use became effective January 1st of this year.  As much as we've heard about their new drug laws, I expected to see signs of it everywhere, but I was wrong.  There were no advertisements, no smoky air and no dazed and confused people walking around.  Just a beautiful, diverse city filled with music, good food and public art.

Colorado residents can purchase up to 1 ounce and out-of-state visitors can buy .25 ounce during their stay.  Colorado expects to take in $184 million in tax revenue in just the first 18 months. Think of what that kind of money could do here in Indiana!
I’ve blogged before about the economic benefits of legalizing marijuana, even if only for medicinal uses.  If you’re interested in reading my thoughts and your fellow students’ comments, you can click here: http://historicalandpoliticalissues.blogspot.com/2009/10/can-marijuana-save-te-economy.html

However, despite the fact that legalizing marijuana may provide much needed revenue, opponents say legalizing pot will only add to social woes; increasing crime, drug addiction, mental health disorders, and driving up insurance rates.  So my question to you this week is "Should the United States legalize marijuana, medicinally or otherwise?" Answers are due by Wednesday, May 14th, 2014.

  1. I think America should legalize marijuana. In Denver first month they grossed over 2.1 million dollars just off of pot sales and that is boosting their economy big time. just think if America legalized it everywhere. they government could actually make some serious changes like; pay off our world wide debt, (this a prayer and a dream, but give more money to education, so tuition rates lower), or even give more students aid to pay for books, contribute to our health security crisis that were going thru, so everyone rich and poor can have affordable health insurance. so yeah making marijuana legal is a good thing.

  2. Driving up insurance rates sounds like an excuse for America not to legalize marijuana. Marijuana should be used however people want to use it. It can be regulated like alcohol for recreational use and it should also be used medicinally. I don't believe that marijuana is a gateway drug, because people who want harder drugs are going to do harder drugs regardless. I think the government and insurance companies are looking at this the wrong way and they should stop policing us. There's money to be made and bowls to be filled. America, you're missing out!

  3. Should the United States legalize marijuana? I think they should. The war on drugs (marijuana) is a wast of time and money that should be used for other purposes. Not for finding the one guy with a small amount of weed and locking them up for years. The money that can be made from this cash crop is endless.

  4. I believe that they should, unless you can show physical and factual proof that it has harmful effects on humans then their are no drawbacks. It would fix our economy to an extent and it also brings in enough revenue to make up for how much of it would be sold. If the government can sell cigarettes that kill, alcohol that kills brain cells and give out prescription drugs like their candy, what is wrong with smoking a little weed and having the munchies???

  5. I believe that this country should legalize marijuana for medical reasons. Just because some people have used it and done stupid things to ruin it for others doesn't mean this "drug" can't be put to good use for the ones who need it. I don't think that the insurance rates should go up for just legalizing it though.

  6. Yes It should be legalized. They need to just give it up and do it already. We need to focus on bigger drug issues than marijuana. Cocaine, heroin, crystal meth. etc... people are going to smoke it anyways, why not make our state more economically stable.

  7. Personally, I have nothing against the use of Marijuana, recreational, or otherwise. I am not an avid smoker and I do not believe that if it is legalized the entire country will fall into "Refer Madness." I am torn on whether or not the country should legalize it probably because it will not affect me either way. I do not think it is as important an issue as legalizing gay marriage or gun control and do believe it should be allowed to see how it works out in the states that have legalized it so far to see if we move forward.

  8. I think that U.S . should legalize marijuana because everyone is smoking it and so many people are getting arrested for possession which is in the end is taking up space in our prisons which could be filled with real criminals. I think everyone is going to smoke it legally or illegally even if its not legal so why not make it legal!

  9. i don't see why they haven't already. people have been wanting it legalized for awhile now. Marijuana is not the worst drug there is, to me it's not that big of a deal. cocaine, meth, those are the type of drugs that people need to get off the streets.

  10. I don't do pot, but I see no reason why it's shouldn't be legal.
It would also help Mexico a lot too with their huge drug war problem.

  11. I do not see anything wrong with legalizing marijuana. I have every now and then smoked myself does that make me an addict no but I believe everyone has a choice whether they smoke or not. There are so many reasons out there that people will come up with on why we should not legalize marijuana. The bigger question is how are they going to regulate it and people not get in trouble for using it. It would cut down on a lot of confusion if people would just read every detail. I would like for Indiana to legalize marijuana but being that we are a very conservative state it would be a difficult to pass the law.

  13. I don't see why you shouldn't legalize it. Colorado's overall crime rate has dropped by almost 15% since legalizing it. Also after a study done by Cato Institute, a librarian think tank, they estimated that the legalization of marijuana would generate about 8.7 billion dollars in federal and state taxes annually. Which could definitely help with the $17 trillion hole the US has dug.

  14. In hindsight, there is no evidence supporting the this drug has any long term side effects. so, i do believe that it should be made legal for health benefits or otherwise. the revenue alone would help out our state and it would go a long way to reducing the "war on drugs." personally even, i know people who smoke for medical reasons and their health has improved astronomically over the past few months since they started.

  15. I feel marijuana should be legal everywhere not only for medical use but because the government would make a killing and help our country out of the debt we are in. Legalizing marijuana would also de-criminalize pot, making alot of room in our prisons for the people who really deserve to be there like rapists, and murderers.

  16. the people who want to ban marijuana are the people who have never tried it. They have heard all their lives that its bad. I felt that they made Colorado a testing ground for it. just to see what can go right and what can go wrong.

  17. Marijuana has been a scapegoat for almost 70 years now. In the 40's and into the 50's many people used it with little affect. It was known as the cigarettes that make you giggle. Not the drug that makes you want to commit crimes or go out and score some heroin. Really it just eases stress and is about as recreational as alcohol but, with way less risk. And now we know it can really help cancer patients and can also be used for hemp products.

  18. We should take baby steps and legalize it for medical uses at first. Even as a non smoker I can see the benefits medically and financially that it can bring. But before we can get into that we first must ask the question. If we can't balance the books now then you know if and when it becomes legal we'll still be financially ignorant. We should "man up" and take a serious look at the pros and cons of our spending before we add a new cash cow loose for people to abuse.

  19. The United States should legalize marijuana. When compared to other "legal" substances such as tobacco and alcohol, marijuana, from the people's understanding of it, doesn't cause as much chaos and death from its usage. The main reason the marijuana has been an illegal substance for so long, is that the United States can't regulate the percentages of THC within marijuana. Otherwise, it would've already been legal.

  20. I don't see why it should be banned personally i do not smoke anything but I don't see why it should be illegal

  21. If it were legal it is also taxable, meaning more money coming in. you can sell it not only medicinally but publically, puting a stop to home growing, and drug trafficking. it might even increase productivity. I don't smoke personally but it might actually help.

  22. Yes I believe that they should legalize it for medical reasons and recreational use because smoking marijuana doesn't make people kill people or harm them. Those are those other drugs that people smoke and shot up. For medical reasons most definitely for those who have cancer and need to take it.

  23. I believe marijuana should be legalized because it has so many benefits not only to our health, but to the environment as well. It can also be used as a medicine to cure cancer, and other diseases, it could be used as body care products, construction, animal feed, essential oils, nutritional supplements, and foods. The reason why I believe it is illegal, is because there are so many benefits it could offer, and politicians, so far the majority of the government will fear losing political power if marijuana legalization progresses any further.

  24. As I said in my previous post, I still believe marijuana should be legalized. There has been no major problems in Colorado since it has been legalized. In fact, they have reported, if anything, crime has declined. I have heard a few stories about crime related to marijuana in Colorado, but the media is searching for things to pin marijuana on now. Considering there is virtually no negative news at all, I'd say states will follow suit with the legalization of marijuana after Colorado's success with it.

  26. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems so far in Colorado, so why not?
